ACADEMY PUBLISHES DEFINITION OF DENTAL SLEEP MEDICINE
AADSM STRATEGIC PLAN
For the last six months the AADSM Board of Directors has been working on a
strategic plan to provide future direction to our organization. Members were
invited to complete a membership survey to direct the board in this important
endeavor. The strategic plan consists of five goals and 18 objectives to
achieve these goals in the next three years. The aim of this plan is to
increase awareness of dental sleep medicine among health professionals and
patients, initiate and strengthen collaborative efforts with other
organizations and provide advanced training and resources to dentists
practicing dental sleep medicine. As a maturing professional organization,
AADSM will continue to play a proactive leadership role in dental sleep
medicine through education, strategic alliances and dissemination of
information.
AADSM SUPPORTS NEW GUIDELINES THAT IDENTIFY ORAL APPLIANCE THERAPY
The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine supports new guidelines that
identify oral appliance therapy as an effective treatment for obstructive sleep
apnea. The guidelines, issued by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and
published in the February 2006 issue of the journal SLEEP, indicate that
patients can use oral appliances as therapy for mild to moderate cases of
obstructive sleep apnea or when continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is
not a viable treatment option.
